Over prescribing antibiotics for Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a common practice. If your doctor is trying to give you an antibiotic, ask them why. If it's not to treat an infection, then you have the option of saying no. Acne treatments and antibiotics are not the answer for HS.
The over-prescription of antibiotics is one of the main reasons biologics were approved.
Doctors are prescribing biologics with an antibiotic, sometimes more than one antibiotic, and even adding Accutane (Isotretinoin) into the mix. In other instances they're prescribing a biologic, an antibiotic, and a steroid, which is unnecessary.
Accutane is not a treatment for HS; it is an extremely harsh drug and is very damaging to the body.
Oral steroids should only be used short-term and are not a regular treatment for HS.
You do not have to take medication just because a doctor prescribes it. The scenarios mentioned above are not logical for Hidradenitis Suppurativa and are very risky. While you may feel desperate with HS do not allow yourself to become so desperate that you are willing to take or do anything.
If you are on a biologic currently and your current treatment is not working for your HS, don’t hesitate to ask for another "logical" treatment to be added to your current treatment regimen.
