Tunneling with HS Abscesses

WHAT IS TUNNELING?

Tunneling happens in Stages 2 and 3 where tunnels (sinus tracts) form under the skin. They are connected to the abscesses and/or several abscesses within the surrounding area. They are sometimes quite deep under the skin depending on the severity and at times lead to fistula formation.

WHAT CAUSES TUNNELING?

As HS progresses in a specific area, the abscesses continue to fill up and drain and scar tissue builds up over time, along with follicular eruption, which is what causes tunneling to develop.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE TUNNELING?

If you have an abscess(es) in a particular area that are draining from more than one area or several areas, this is a good indication you have tunneling.

HOW DO I AVOID TUNNELING?

Manage your HS to the best of your ability and avoid squeezing and lancing.

CAN I GET RID OF TUNNELING?

No, once tunneling has developed it is permanent. Surgical intervention is the only way to permanently remove tunneling.
